How do I get from Frankfurt city centre to Frankfurt Airport?

For one traveler the S-Bahn S8 or S9 is the way we recommend: €6.90 in total, 14 min, boarding at Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof. It runs at any hour. Frankfurt Airport's own guidance: at least 3 hours ahead for a non-EU flight, about 2.5 hours if you're checking a bag on an EU flight, and about 2 hours with hand luggage only. These are guideline times — check your airline's own counter hours too, since arriving much earlier just means a longer wait.

Early flight?

The S-Bahn runs right through the night on this route: an S8 or S9 leaves Hauptbahnhof, Hauptwache, Konstablerwache or Taunusanlage at least every 30 minutes even between 1am and 4am, so there's always one for an early flight without waiting for the day's first train.

At the station

At Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof the S-Bahn platforms sit one level down from the main concourse: head for the stairs, escalators or lift near platforms 15 or 18 on the cross-platform, then down again to reach the S8/S9 level.

Tickets

Buy before boarding: ticket machines stand at every stop, day and night, or use the VGF service centres at Hauptwache or Konstablerwache, open Monday to Saturday. Ask for "Preisstufe 4" if buying from a person — nothing at the machine or the counter is labelled "airport".

Which terminal

The S-Bahn's Regionalbahnhof sits in the basement of Terminal 1 — take the escalators or lift up to reach the departures level directly. Flying from Terminal 3, follow the signs for Terminal 3 G, H or J and ride the free SkyLine train on, about 10 to 15 minutes.
