Finding the station

Both S1 and S8 use the station named Flughafen München, at the Munich Airport Center between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. A separate stop, Besucherpark, serves only the long-stay car parks, not the terminals.

Finding the stop

The Airport Express coach leaves from Terminal 2, bus stop 1, level E03, also calling at Terminal 1 Arrivals B. Regional MVV buses to Freising and Erding leave from Terminalstraße Mitte, level E04, in the Munich Airport Center between the terminals.

The taxi rank

Taxi ranks are at level 00: outside Terminal 1's exits B, C and D, and at Vorfahrt Nord outside Terminal 2. The fixed fare to the Hauptbahnhof zone applies from either rank.

The online fare. Bought from the driver it is EUR 13.50 for an adult and EUR 8.00 for a child aged 6 to 14. Anyone may travel; it is not restricted to Lufthansa passengers.

It is the cheapest option for one or two travelers and the dearest per head from three, because it has no group fare of any kind and the train does.

Buying from the driver costs EUR 1.00 more than buying online, so book on your phone before you board.

The last departure is 22:25. It is a daytime service and covers none of the night.

It is a road journey into the middle of Munich and the published 45 minutes is a fair-weather figure.

Departures from Terminal 2 run 06:25 to 22:25, every 20 minutes daily. There is no coach at all outside those hours, which matters because the train is the only thing left and its night service is disputed.

Buy the Gruppen-Tageskarte if there are three or more of you. It is EUR 32.60 whether you are three or five, against EUR 15.10 each in singles, and the machines do not suggest it.

No first or last train is stated here: the airport says the S8 runs all night, about every 40 minutes between 01:00 and 04:00, but the S8's own timetable limits those 01:00 and 02:00 departures to Friday, Saturday and pre-holiday nights. Expect no train those hours on other nights.

The S1 also serves the airport and is not the same journey: it runs the other way round the city and reaches Hauptbahnhof before Marienplatz. Check which train you are boarding.

The group ticket is valid all day on the entire MVV network, so it keeps paying for itself after you have dropped your bags.

It loses at every party size from one to eight. Even eight people in one large taxi pay EUR 106.00 against EUR 65.20 for two group tickets on the train.

The fixed fare applies to the Hauptbahnhof zone. The extent of that zone is not stated here, so for an address elsewhere in Munich agree the basis of the fare before setting off.

It is the only option here that certainly runs all night, which is its real argument rather than the price.

A single for one MVV zone (the airport and Freising Bahnhof share zone 5) is EUR 2.70, or EUR 2.00 for a child aged 6 to 14. A Streifenkarte is EUR 18.70 for ten strips, one strip a head here and shareable by several people, so seven or more travel cheaper on one card than on singles. The one-zone Gruppen-Tageskarte, EUR 15.40, costs more than five singles. The MVV app's check-in fare (MVVswipe) charges EUR 1.87 a head but needs a registered account.

Not the S1 — despite the map, Freising and the airport are on separate branches that meet at Neufahrn. Going by S-Bahn means changing there: 33 minutes and three zones for EUR 6.40, against 16 minutes and EUR 2.70 on this bus.

Seven or more should buy one Streifenkarte and stamp a strip each: EUR 18.70 against EUR 18.90 in singles. Six or fewer are cheaper on singles, and the one-zone group day ticket at EUR 15.40 is dearer than five singles.

The last bus is 01:01 and the first 03:51. Between them nothing goes to Freising except, on Friday and Saturday nights, the S8 into Munich and the S1 back out, which is the long way round on an M-5 fare.

The ÜFEX train from the station under the same building is five minutes quicker on the same ticket, but hourly; this bus is every 10 minutes.

The times here come from MVV's journey planner read for three dates in September 2026, because MVV prints no timetable for the 635; check it for the day you travel.

Every 10 minutes from 03:51 to 23:51, then every 20 minutes to 01:01, on a Tuesday, a Saturday and a Sunday alike in MVV's own journey planner, since MVV does not publish a separate timetable for this line. Nothing runs between 01:01 and 03:51.

Same zone-5 MVV fare as the bus: EUR 2.70 single, EUR 2.00 for a child, or one strip of an EUR 18.70 Streifenkarte — the tariff is set by zone, not vehicle. The train carries on to Moosburg, Landshut and Regensburg, where MVV tickets stop being valid.

Hourly, so the wait can be longer than the ride. Between trains bus 635 does the same job in 16 minutes on the same ticket, every 10 minutes.

It is a regional express on the MVV tariff only as far as the MVV area reaches: an MVV single, a Streifenkarte strip or a day ticket covers Freising; Moosburg and Landshut are further out and are priced by the Deutschlandtarif or a Bayern-Ticket instead.

Alternate trains are run by DB Regio Bayern and by agilis, according to both MVV's and the state's timetable data; the ticket is the same on either.

The last train is 00:21 and the first 04:28. The 635 bus runs later, to 01:01, and starts earlier, at 03:51.

21 trains a day: 04:28, 05:28, 05:58 and 07:01, then 08:16 and hourly at 16 minutes past to 23:16, with a last train at 00:21. At weekends 05:12 and 06:16 replace the 05:28 and 05:58.

The airport is zone 5, Erding zone 4, so the fare is a two-zone single: EUR 4.20, or EUR 2.00 for a child. From five people, two products undercut singles: an EUR 18.70 Streifenkarte (two strips a head, one card carries exactly five) or the EUR 19.70 two-zone Gruppen-Tageskarte, valid all day in zones 4 and 5. The card is a euro cheaper; the day ticket buys the rest of the day. Four or fewer are cheaper on singles.

Not the s-bahn. Erding is the end of the S2 from Munich, which never comes near the airport: by rail you would ride into the city and out again on an M-5 ticket. This bus is direct.

Five people: one EUR 18.70 Streifenkarte, two strips each, or the EUR 19.70 two-zone Gruppen-Tageskarte. Four or fewer: singles at EUR 4.20 are cheaper.

It is a stopping bus through three villages, 30 or 34 minutes depending on the departure, every 20 minutes on weekdays and every 40 at weekends.

The last bus is 02:13 on weeknights and 01:53 at weekends, the first 03:53 every day; nothing runs in between.

The Kurzstrecke short-hop fare does not apply between the airport and Schwaig — printed on the line's own timetable — so the first stops cost the full EUR 4.20 too.

Monday to Friday: 03:53, then every 20 minutes from 04:13 to 23:53, then 00:13 to 02:13. Saturdays, Sundays and holidays: 03:53, then every 40 minutes from 04:33 to 23:53, then 00:33, 01:13 and 01:53. Nothing runs between 02:13 (01:53 at weekends) and 03:53. 24 and 31 December run as a Saturday.

Worth knowing

A MVV Gruppen-Tageskarte covers up to five people for EUR 32.60 all day. Three people pay EUR 32.60 between them rather than EUR 45.30 in singles; below three, the coach is cheaper.

The "Airport-City-Day-Ticket" is just the ordinary MVV Tageskarte for zones M-5: EUR 17.50 for one, EUR 32.60 for a group of up to five. It stays valid on the rest of Munich transport for the rest of the day.

S1 and S8 both serve the airport but are not interchangeable: they run opposite ways round the city and reverse the order of Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz. The S8 goes east and reaches Marienplatz first.

The regulated taxi fare fell on 1 July 2026, from EUR 106.00 to EUR 96.00 to the Hauptbahnhof zone. Any figure you find elsewhere online is probably the old one.

Two children aged 6 to 15 count as one person on the group ticket, so a family of two adults and four children still travels on a single EUR 32.60 ticket.
