How do I get from Düsseldorf city centre to Düsseldorf airport?

For one traveler the S11 from under the terminal is the way we recommend: €3.80 in total, 12 min, boarding at Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof. The first one leaves at 05:03 and is at the airport by about 05:15; the last leaves at 00:53. The airport gives no "be here N hours before" figure: airlines open check-in three hours before departure at the earliest, and it says to ask your airline how early to come. Counters open from 03:30; Condor and Eurowings from 03:00 until 25 October 2026. Some airlines take bags the evening before, 18:00 to 20:00.

Early flights

The first U80 leaves the Hauptbahnhof at 03:45 on weekdays and 03:39 at weekends and is at the terminal 18 minutes later; the first 721 bus is 03:49 (03:58 Saturday, 04:28 Sunday), the first S11 05:03 (05:23 at weekends). Any of them supports a flight from about 05:30 with the airport's 03:30 counters.

At the station

At the Hauptbahnhof take the S11 towards "Flughafen Terminal" from the S-Bahn platforms, or the U80 from the Stadtbahn level: both end at the terminal. A train shown to "Düsseldorf Flughafen" is the other station, 2.5 km short — you would then need the SkyTrain, which does not run between 00:45 and 03:45.

Where the bus leaves from

Bus 721 to the airport boards at the bus stands outside the Hauptbahnhof, about every 20 minutes by day and every 30 in the evening, and reaches the terminal in 25 to 28 minutes. It is the slowest of the three ways and the only one on the road.

Tickets

The same EUR 3.80 Preisstufe A single covers the ride out, whichever line you take, and the SkyTrain if you go via Düsseldorf Flughafen station. Buy it in the VRR or Rheinbahn app or at a machine and validate a paper ticket before boarding; a Deutschlandticket needs nothing more.
