ACTV Aerobus, line 5orWater taxi?

The short answer

These do not go to the same place, so price is not the comparison. The Water taxi reaches the historic city — San Marco and the islands within it; the ACTV Aerobus, line 5 does not. Piazzale Roma is the edge of Venice, not the middle — no wheeled vehicle goes further. St Mark's is another 39 minutes and EUR 9.50 by vaporetto from here. This is the right choice if you are staying near Piazzale Roma, Santa Lucia station or on the mainland at Mestre.

The ACTV Aerobus, line 5 is quicker: 20 min against 30 min.

ACTV Aerobus, line 5: 04:08–01:10. Water taxi: Runs all night.

It does not reach St mark's. Piazzale Roma is the edge of the city; the vaporetto on from there is 39 minutes and EUR 9.50, which makes EUR 19.50 in total — more than the boat that goes directly.

Going on by water, buy the EUR 18.00 combined ticket rather than two singles. It covers this bus and 90 minutes of vaporetto.

It is the right choice, and cheap, if you are staying near Piazzale Roma, the station or on the mainland at Mestre.

No bus leaves the airport between 01:10 and 04:08; the land taxi to Piazzale Roma, EUR 40.00, runs at any hour.

The ordinary EUR 9.50 network ticket is not valid for the airport leg — the exclusion is written into the tariff.

It may legally carry up to twenty people — the municipal regulation caps a licence at twenty, and operators run boats seating about ten. That is far more than the four almost every other airport taxi allows.

It still does not beat the boat service for a group, because the fare stops being flat above four people: eight travelers pay EUR 150.00 against EUR 144.00 on Alilaguna. It only pulls ahead at nine.

Between 00:00 and 07:00, check you are buying a boat. The operators' own consortium warns that at those hours an airport booking may mean a car to Piazzale Roma and a boat onward.

A flat EUR 10.00 is added to the whole fare between 22:00 and 06:00.

This is the only option that can reach a hotel door, where a canal allows it — which for some addresses with luggage is the whole argument.
