On arrival at Keflavík Airport

From the arrivals hall to each way in
Finding the stop

The Flybus stop is just outside the arrivals hall; the coach waits for every flight and leaves 30 to 60 minutes after it lands. Bus 55 leaves from the Strætó stop near Kjóavellir, on the departures side of the terminal, not from the arrivals door.

Tickets

Flybus sells at its desk beside the door in the arrivals hall, online and at BSÍ; a mobile ticket is enough, and the desk is the only place that takes cash. Bus 55 cannot be booked: pay the driver by card or cash when you board.

The taxi rank

Taxis wait directly outside the arrivals area, 24 hours a day. The airport tells you to ask the price before the journey starts and to check the price list in the car — a fixed price to Reykjavík must come from that list — and every taxi must take a card or a phone.

Uber and Bolt

Hopp, an Icelandic app, books a licensed taxi at Keflavík and shows the price before you confirm; it names no fixed pickup point, so follow the app after you land. The ride is priced in the app, not by a published fare, so no total for it appears here.

Luggage

Flybus carries two bags of up to 23 kg each and one small carry-on per person free; skis, bicycles and other odd-sized items cost ISK 1,500 to 3,800 and must be declared when booking. On bus 55 you load your own bag into the hold — it must be one you can carry yourself.

Four or more people and a return booked together get an automatic discount; the size is not published.

There is no timetable from the airport: the coach leaves 30 to 60 minutes after each flight lands, whatever the hour, and a delayed flight keeps your ticket valid for the next coach.

Flybus+ adds the hotel shuttle for ISK 1,300 more. BSÍ is about ten minutes on foot from Hallgrímskirkja, so for the centre the plain ticket is often enough.

A single ticket is one way only. Book the return with it and the second leg is discounted; four or more travelling together are discounted automatically. Neither figure is published, so this page prices full singles.

Seven of you pay ISK 27,993 here against ISK 26,500 in a BSR minibus booked ahead; six pay 23,994 and the coach still wins.

Cash is taken only in króna and only at the airport counter; cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Alipay and WeChat Pay everywhere.

This is the public-transport answer on any weekend and on most weekday buses: the 55 ends at Fjörður bus station and bus 1 continues from the same station to the centre in about 27 minutes.

The connection is timed — eight to eleven minutes at Fjörður on every trip — so the 84 minutes hold; the last 55 of the day (22:54) meets the 23:51 bus 1.

Worth knowing

Bus 55 is signed "KEF – Airport – Reykjavík", but only five weekday buses go to Reykjavík: 06:27, 07:54, 14:54, 15:54 and 16:54. Every other bus, and every weekend bus, ends at Fjörður in Hafnarfjörður.

From Fjörður, city bus 1 leaves for the centre about ten minutes after each bus 55, until 00:21. The two tickets come to ISK 2,490 — ISK 90 more than the direct bus — and the whole trip takes 84 minutes.

The airport says it is about 50 km from the centre on its transport and taxi pages and about 40 km on its driving page; the coach operator says 50 km and 45 minutes. Plan on 45 minutes by road.

Pay the bus driver by card or cash; the Klapp app does not sell the airport fare. Flybus takes cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay; cash only in króna and only at its airport counter.
